Early Life
Angelique Kidjo was born on July 14, 1960, in Ouidah, Benin, into a large family of nine. Oscar Kidjo is her younger brother. Her mother, Yvonne Kidjo, is Yoruba, while her father, Franck Kidjo, is Fon. As a result of her ancestry, she speaks French, English, and three additional African languages, including Fon and Yoruba.

The birthplace of Kidjo was Ouidah, French Dahomey, in what is now Benin. Her father is of the Ouidah Fon tribe, while her mother is of the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria. She grew up listening to Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, James Brown, Manu Dibango, Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix, Fela Kuti, Stevie Wonder, Osibisa, and Santana, as well as Yoruba and Beninese traditional music. Kidjo started performing with her mother’s theatre group by the age of six, giving her an early affinity for traditional music and dance.
She began singing in her school band, Les Sphinx, and had national radio fame as a teenager with her interpretation of Miriam Makeba’s “Les Trois Z.” Kidjo collaborated with Cameroonian producer, Ekambi Brilliant and her brother Oscar on the album Pretty. It included the songs “Ninive,” “Gbe Agossi,” and a tribute to one of her idols, vocalist Bella Bellow. The album’s success enabled her to tour throughout West Africa.
Career
Because ongoing political tensions in Benin precluded her from working as an independent artist in her own country, she relocated to Paris in 1983. While in Paris, Angelique Kidjo was working at various day jobs to pay off her tuition fee in a reputable school in Paris where she studied Music at the CIM.
She met and married musician and producer Jean Hebrail in 1987, with whom she composed the majority of her music. Kidjo began her career as a backup singer in local bands.
By the end of the 1980s, she had become one of the most prominent live performers in Paris and had released a solo album for the Open Jazz Label called Parakou. Chris Blackwell, the founder of Island Records, ‘discovered’ her in Paris and signed her in 1991.

She released four albums for Island before Blackwell left the label. Columbia Records signed her in New York in 2000, and she made two albums for them. Spirit Rising: My Life, My Music, her debut book, was published in 2014. She also published a book titled La voix est le miroir de l’amour.
