Raymond Abbas popularly known as Hushpuppi, born (October 11, 1982) was a Nigerian social media celebrity and alleged internet fraudster in June 2020.

Hushpuppi as he’s popularly known gained notoriety for flaunting his extravagant lifestyle on social media, Instagram to be precise, showcasing luxury cars, designer fashion, and exotic vacations.

In June 2020, Raymod Abbas was arrested in his residence in Dubai by law enforcement authorities by the FBI, as part of a multinational operation called “Fox Hunt 2”. This operation aimed to target cybercrime networks and Hushpuppi was accused of being involved in a global cyber fraud conspiracy.

He was allegedly involved in defrauding individuals and organizations of millions of dollars.

Many news platforms have reported that Hushpuppi was once a second-hand clothes seller in Lagos. Abbas prided himself on his humble beginnings. Hushpuppi’s close associate, Mompha once revealed that his dad is still a cab driver in Lagos.

Career

Hushpuppi gained prominence primarily through his extravagant lifestyle showcased on social media platforms, especially Instagram. The Nigerian singer Timaya released a song called “Telli Person” in 2017 which featured Olamide and Phyno. The song took aim at Hushpuppi, with whom the artists had a long-standing feud.

The lyrics indirectly accused Hushpuppi of being a swindler who spent his money on designer clothes instead of investing in profitable ventures. The song also warned him that he would soon be caught by authorities.

Hushpuppi was suspected of being involved in various cybercrimes and online scams, which allegedly defrauded individuals and businesses of large sums of money. These suspicions eventually led to his arrest in 2020, as part of an international law enforcement operation that targeted cybercrime networks.

On 28 July 2021, Hushpuppi pleaded guilty to money laundering and also identified a Deputy Commissioner of Police in Nigeria, Abba Kyari, as an accomplice in his $1.1 million scam deal. The following day, a US Court granted an FBI warrant to arrest Abba Kyari.

The Police chief was further implicated after his conversation with Hushpuppi was released.

Hushpuppi Sentence

Raymond Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi, wrote a personal letter to Judge Otis Wright before his scheduled sentencing on September 19, 2022.

In the letter, he explained the source of his wealth, his criminal activities, and expressed remorse for his actions. He also apologized to his family for bringing shame upon them and praised the FBI for their thorough work in bringing him to justice.

On November 8, 2022, Hushpuppi was sentenced to over 11 years (135 months) in a federal prison.
