His father, Sule Lamido served as Foreign Affairs Minister of Nigeria from 1999 to 2003. He was elected Governor of Jigawa State in April 2007. He is a member of the former ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He ran successfully for reelection on 26 April 2011.

Mustapha Sule Lamido is a graduate of Political Science from the University, of Abuja, and he holds a PhD via Masters in International Affairs and Diplomacy from the prestigious university, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. the son of former Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa, has emerged the state Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate for 2023 poll. The returning officer for the primaries, Isah Ahmed, said this when he announced the results on Wednesday in Dutse.
According to Mr. Ahmed, he said, Mr. Mustapha Sule Lamido scored 829 out of the 832 votes cast to win the primaries, adding that Saleh Shehu, placed second with zero vote.
