Sani Abacha attended Nigerian and British Military Training colleges for his formal military education. Throughout his military career, Abacha participated in every military coup in Nigeria. In 1966, while still a second lieutenant with the 3rd Battalion in Kaduna, he participated in the July 1966 Nigerian counter-coup from the conceptual stage. He might have also participated in the coup’s phases in Lagos or Abeokuta in January of the previous year.
He participated in the Nigerian Civil War in 1969 as a battalion and platoon leader. In 1975, he was promoted to division commander of the 2nd Infantry. Abacha joined the Supreme Military Council in 1983 while serving as general officer commanding the 2nd Mechanized Division.
He advanced through the Nigerian military’s ranks and by 1983 had attained the rank of brigadier when he helped Ibrahim Babangida depose Shehu Shagari, who had been chosen to serve a second term as president.
Abacha was also a key player in the 1985 coup d’etat that ousted Muhammadu Buhari and installed General Ibrahim Babangida. Abacha was appointed Chief of Army Staff in 1985, the same year General Ibrahim Babangida was became head of state and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Later, in 1990, he was appointed Minister of Defence.
Before he was famous, He went to the Nigerian Military Training College and Mons Officer Cadet School. His relationship status is married. He is married to Maryam Abacha.
Sani Abacha Death
Abacha died in the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja on June 8, 1998. He was buried on the same day according to Muslim custom and without an autopsy, which stoked rumours that he might have been murdered. The abrupt heart attack was determined to cause death by the authorities.
